Last week, I went to go see the documentary “The Hunting Ground.” I wasn’t incredibly excited about it, not because I didn’t want to see it, but because it had been a really long day of driving to other cities and going to classes and holding office hours, and by the time the movie started, I’d already been doing life for almost 12 hours. But I was going anyway because, as I said to a friend earlier, “sexual assault prevention is kind of my thing.” That was a kind of weird thing for me to say, but it’s true. I’m into social justice and women’s advocacy, what can I say?
I thought the documentary was about as comprehensive and compelling as it could be in its 90 minutes, but what struck me most about the evening was the amazing power of the women behind the movement. Young women across the country who have gone through horrible things (at the hands of both perpetrators and administrations) have banded together to take action against rape culture. Their bravery and passion is seriously awe-inspiring. After the documentary, we Skyped with two of the women from the movie, Sofie Karasek and Kamilah Willingham, and they were just too cool for words. They were so well-spoken, knowledgable, gracious and wonderful, and they only inspired me to continue on in activism and social justice.
To everyone involved in this movement: thank you for everything you do, and don’t give up.
